[Crypto-chi] Suggestion to break encryption by paying off Apple and Google

hi everybody!
A proposal set forth by one professor at Pace University is to dangle some dough in front of Apple and Google so they can change the encryption they're using (where it's on the device only) to have the keys held by the respective companies. This in an effort to combat terrorism. Personally I don't think it's gonna work. For one thing neither Apple nor Google are hurting for cash. Secondly it goes against the grain of their CEOs, Apple's in particular. Decide for yourself. Good idea or bad idea?
